A Tribute to Dedication: Celebrating Dr. Guelmann's Impact on ABPD

The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Marcio Guelmann as he concludes his term as president. Dr. Guelmann's dedication and leadership within the ABPD Board of Directors have been instrumental in guiding the organization throughout the past year.
While Dr. Guelmann continues to serve on the board of directors for another year as the immediate past president, ABPD wishes to acknowledge the impact he has had within the organization during his term as president, as well as the dedication he has demonstrated within the field of pediatric dentistry throughout his career.
Guelmann's Career
Dr. Guelmann's journey in pediatric dentistry began with his DDS degree from the Federal University of Parana, Brazil, in 1984. He further honed his expertise by earning a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1988. His commitment to advancing pediatric dental care was evident during the first decade of his career when he balanced private practice with part-time academic roles in Israel. He also served as president of the Israeli Society of Pediatric Dentistry from 1995 to 1998, showcasing his leadership skills and dedication to the profession.
In 2000, Dr. Guelmann completed a fellowship in pediatric dentistry at the University of Florida (UF) and joined the institution as an assistant professor. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become Professor, Chair, and residency program director of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. His leadership at UF has been instrumental in shaping the department and mentoring the next generation of pediatric dentists. While balancing his many responsibilities during his term as president of ABPD, in March of 2024, Dr. Guelmann was recognized by the University of Florida for his outstanding service and impact upon his students through the 2024 UFCD Superior Accomplishment Award for Individual Employee Performance.
Dr. Guelmann became board certified by ABPD in 2006. His involvement with ABPD has been extensive, serving as an examiner for the Oral Clinical Examination (OCE) from 2009 to 2017 and as a part leader for the Oral Clinical Examination Committee (OCEC) in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, he chaired the OCEC, further demonstrating his commitment to the field of pediatric dentistry.
Academic and Scholarly Impact
As a faculty member, program director, and department chair at UF, Dr. Guelmann has guided the pediatric dental education of over 160 residents. He continues to be a resource to the program graduates as they progress in their careers.
A Fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute and the American College of Dentists, Dr. Guelmann has been a prominent figure in dental education and leadership. He has served as a consultant and site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation, helping dental programs across the country meet rigorous standards. His role as Executive Director for the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry from 2017 to 2019 highlights his continuous efforts to advance the profession at both state and national levels.
Dr. Guelmann's scholarly contributions are extensive, with over 60 manuscripts and book chapters to his name. His work as a reviewer for national and international pediatric dental journals underscores his commitment to advancing research and knowledge in the field.
Dr. Guelmann is a member of the Kellogg leadership Institute Cohort VII, sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation.
